We explain how to combine unemployment benefits with traveling abroad.
Sometimes the question arises as to whether it's possible to collect unemployment benefits and travel abroad to visit a relative, visit a European city for a weekend, or for any other reason. Well, there are different scenarios depending on the length of time you'll be away:
Period of less than 15 days
If the absence does not exceed 15 calendar days, only once per year, the benefit is maintained, provided that you can comply with the obligations established by law.
To do this, it is advisable to notify the State Public Employment Service of your departure beforehand, using a notification form. Upon your return from abroad, you must also report to the employment office on the first business day following your return.
Period longer than 15 days and not more than 90
If the period is longer than 15 days and up to a maximum of 90 days, there is no need to provide any special justification, but you can still request authorization at the employment office.
However, in this specific case, the benefit is suspended and resumes upon return. No benefit days are lost, and the same amount continues to be received. This type of authorization is possible as a result of Supreme Court Ruling STS 7817/2012.
Period exceeding 90 days
If the trip abroad lasts longer than 90 days, unemployment benefits are suspended and can be resumed upon return if certain requirements are met, depending on the reason for leaving the country.
Attention: If you leave the country for more than 90 days without justification and/or notification, the State Public Employment Service will detect it through passport control, and then the benefit will be terminated and you will be required to return the amounts unduly received.
