It's a fact that the market has become internationalized, even for small businesses, and it's increasingly common to find good deals on the materials we need outside the EU. Our products could also be of interest to non-EU customers. But how can we trade with them, considering the customs procedures involved?
Even if we put ourselves in the hands of an agent who will facilitate any type of procedure, if it is the first time we carry out a customs operation, whether it is an import or an export, we will need to be provided with an EORI number.
What is EORI?
EORI stands for ECONOMIC OPERATOR REGISTRATION AND IDENTIFICATION, it is therefore the registration and identification number of economic operators, unique in the customs territory of the Union, assigned by a customs authority to an economic operator or another person in order to register him for customs purposes.
In other words, the EORI number obtained in Spain will be valid for operating from any EU customs office.
Who needs an EORI number?
It must be requested by all economic operators in the member states, that is, natural or legal persons, or entities that carry out activities with customs within the framework of a business or professional activity. Therefore, if we make any imports in our personal capacity, we will not be required to obtain it.
How to obtain the EORI in Spain?
On the AEAT website , by identifying ourselves with the digital certificate, obtaining it is practically immediate.
When we request it, we should not expect the issuance of any certificate; we will simply receive confirmation that we are registered and the assignment of the number
What is the structure of the EORI number?
In Spain, the format ES (ISO code for Spain) + NIF has been chosen, but not all States have chosen the same format, although in any case it will be preceded by the ISO code of the respective country.
Despite having the same structure, we must not confuse the EORI number with the VIES number, which corresponds to the number assigned to community operators to carry out operations within the EU.
