Strategic Planning and SMEs

Do small business owners have a strategy?

We know that strategy is the path we've chosen to achieve our vision, and we know that all entrepreneurs have a strategy, but is that enough? The answer is decidedly no. What good is a strategy without planning? How can we execute it if no one knows, understands, or shares it?

In an ideal world, where resources were unlimited (especially time and knowledge), we would surely invest in "planning" our strategy, decide on each of the major actions necessary to achieve the Vision, order them in time, give them resources, make them known to our collaborators, evaluate their achievement, correct deviations and, above all, give them continuity.

But we know that resources are not unlimited, that the smaller the company, the more it absorbs the urgent and the less is left for the important, so we park the strategy, only remembering it on some long weekends, and especially during vacation periods, from which we return with many ideas that we put into action in a disorderly way, and those that we do not continue, because the urgent, the short term, quickly drowns them.

Lack of continuity in actions is one of the major symptoms of a company's malfunctioning.

But does it necessarily have to be that way? The answer is again, no. We simply need to change the order of some things, and if necessary, rely on someone who has the knowledge, experience, and time we need, and of course, we must recognize their authority to do the work. It's very little effort for a great result.

I'm a businessman; I have a vision, a strategy, and a plan. I've agreed upon it with my partners and the company's executives, and I've made it transparent to the entire organization. The actions are supported and driven, and there's continuity because there's a path forward, and we all know it.

Strategic planning does not guarantee success; we may have a mirage of vision, we may err in strategy, and even a sudden change in the environment can change everything, but would we be better off if we ignored it?
