The Business Plan and Financing

It hasn't even been a week since I had this conversation with a client: "Pau, I need financing, because the money isn't coming in, but things are working out for me, orders are increasing month by month, could you introduce me to a bank manager who will treat me well?".

This is neither the first call, nor will it be the last. I have been advising companies for over twenty years and I have learned that cycles and behaviors repeat themselves.

We come from a long and deep economic crisis: a sharp reduction in demand, excessive debt, and ultimately, the need for drastic decisions regarding investment and employment. And we have all said to ourselves at some point: "this will not happen to me again.".

Of course, the way to protect ourselves from the next crisis isn't to start taking on bank debt again without strategy or planning. Cash flow problems are uncomfortable and often force us to make poor financing decisions, but we can avoid that situation by using the right tool: the Business Plan.

The Business Plan outlines my product, my market, my projected sales, my investments, my workforce growth, salary trends, my customers' payment habits, and so on—all within the framework of my entrepreneurial strategy. From this, I determine my financing needs for the coming years, allowing me to select the most appropriate instruments and plan accordingly.

Financial institutions, which have also changed in recent years, value companies that, in addition to knowing about their products, understand their finances. The bank branch manager is not our financial advisor; they are simply another supplier for our company.
