How do we get from vision to action plans?
From the time we are old enough to understand and acquire language, we are asked, and ask ourselves, about our future. What do we want to be when we grow up?
As children, we hear statements from our parents and grandparents such as "this child will be a firefighter because he likes risk" or "he will be a sommelier because he has an extremely developed sense of smell and taste.".
Even as pre-teens, we tell ourselves, "I want to be a pilot," "I want to be a doctor," or "I want to be a tattoo artist." We're still not sure; there are so many paths open to us, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. It's so hard to decide!
Often we're unaware, but our minds never rest; they continually return to those ideas, and eventually they take shape. One day we wake up with a vision: "I want to be an economist, and I want to work for a large multinational companythat gives me opportunities worldwide."
Vision is the horizon we see when we look up, the horizon we aspire to reach. We all have a vision in our lives. This applies to individuals, organizations, and, more specifically, businesses, which are the focus of our blog.
All entrepreneurs are born from a vision, all business owners grow from a vision, any company, whatever its activity or size, has a single vision, and if it doesn't, it's because it's changing, or because there's more than one leader…
And once we have a clear vision , we begin to think about how to achieve it. As entrepreneurs, we analyze the gap that separates us from that horizon. This gap is comprised of demand, supply, the product, legislation, geography, and so on. We begin to reason about different ways to bridge it. We are already developing a strategy.
My action plans, which are nothing more than what I have decided to do this month, this quarter or this year, such as an advertising campaign, a change of machinery or the hiring of a person, are always guided by a strategy.
Strategy is simply the course we will follow to cross the gap between ourselves and our vision, and the Business Plan is nothing more and nothing less than a tool that organizes vision, strategy, and action plans, which is no small feat.
